Hi! I hope someone can help me. Our troop (in USA) is featuring Malaysia and I would like to find out anything unique about PPPM or/and PP Tunas. I also noticed there are several flower kumpulan in PP Tunas - what does that translate to? Do you have a special hand sign or song or other tradition? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Xpeejay,

Greetings from Malaysia. Our Pandu Puteri Tunas are grouped into Kumpulan Berenam or Brownie Six. Each group is named after the flowers below.

Bunga kenanga - Cananga odorata

Bunga Melor - Jasminum sambac

Bunga Kesidang - vallaris glabra

Bunga Siantan  - Ixora

Bunga Teratai - Nelumbo nucifera

Bunga Cempaka Kuning - Michelia champaca

The Guider is called Kakak Setia and she is assisted by Siti Setia.

Hand Sign:   Raise the right hand upright to shoulder level with three fingers (symbolise the Threefold Promise), thumb and little finger bent and touching.

The Motto :   Tolong Orang Selalu or Lend a Hand

Pandu Puteri Tunas shakes hands with the left hand and does at least one Good Turn a day.

At the beginning of a Pandu Puteri Tunas meeting, the girls sing the songs below:

Lagu Pandu Puteri Tunas
 Puteri Tunas bertujuan
Menolong dan Berkawan

Lagu Ahli Baru        (Sung by new members)
  Ahli Baru Suka Hati
  Menjadi Puteri Tunas

Kumpulan Teratai
Teratai Nama Kami
Bekerja Setiap Hari

Kumpulan Cempaka
Cempaka Bersuka Ria
Menolong Orang Duka

Kumpulan Kesidang
Kami Kesidang Datang
Menolong Pagi Petang

Kumpulan Siantan
Siantan Datang Berkawan
 Berani Macam Pahlawan

Kumpulan Melur
Melur Taat dan Setia
Berusaha Setiap Masa

Kumpulan Kenanga
Kami bernama Kenanga
Berjasa Bertenaga

At the close of the meeting, they sing the song below:

LOCENG PUTERI TUNAS
Oh Tuhanku
Seruan hambamu
Beri kami nikmat
Sepanjang hayat
Selamat tinggal, selamat tinggal.

I hope this info helps. Happy Thinking Day.

Warm regards,

Hi Joyce,
Thanks so much for your information. I have almost given up! A few more questions: 1) Does SITI (in Siti Setia) mean anything? 2) What does bertujuan mean?  3) Under the kumpulan eg. Melur taat dan setia ........, is that part of the song or just their particular slogan/motto? Thanks again.

Dear Xpeejay,

Glad the information is of help to you. My sincere apologies for the late response this round.

1)  In Egyptian, the name Siti means -  lady. I believe `Siti' used in Siti Setia is a polite and respectful form of address for a lady or an older female whom the girls look up to for guidance.

2)  `Bertujuan’   - the `aim’ of Puteri Tunas .... that is to enable the individual to help others and make friends.

3)   The song for each kumpulan (circle song) is part and parcel of the Lingkungan Puteri Tunas (Brownie Ring) in the traditional opening ceremony. Each Kumpulan Berenam is identified by their respective emblems (flowers) along with their respective songs which instill good moral values.
